RULES.

1. The Society shall be called " THE SUSSEX EECOED SOCIETY," and its object shall be to transcribe and publish documents relating to the County.

2. The affairs of the Society shall be managed by a Council, which shall consist of a President, Vice- Presidents, the Secretary, the Literary Director, the Treasurer and Twelve Members, all of whom shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting. Three Members of the Council shall form a quorum.

3. Every Candidate for Membership on being nominated by a Member, to whom he is personally known, shall be admitted by the Secretary on payment of his subscription.

4. The Council shall have power to elect as an Honorary Member outside the County any person likely to promote the interests of the Society.

5. The Annual Subscription shall be One Guinea, payable on election, and afterwards on the 1st of January in each year, entitling to all publications issued during the year, but no Volumes will be sent to Members whose Subscription is in arrear. Any Member intending to withdraw his name from the Society shall give notice in writing to the Secretary on or before the 1st of January in any year of his intention to do so, otherwise he shall be liable for the current year's subscription. The Council shall have power at its discretion to remove the name of any Member who is more than one year in arrear of his subscription.

6. The Annual General Meeting of the Members shall be held at Lewes in February of every year.

7. A Special General Meeting shall be summoned by the Secretary on the requisition in writing of Five Members or of the President or Two Vice-Presidents, specifying the subject to be brought forward for consideration at such Meeting, and that subject only shall be then considered.

8. No alteration shall be made in the Kules except at the Annual General Meeting, and notice in writing of the proposed alteration shall be given to the Secretary in January.

9. The Accounts of the Society shall be submitted annually to the examination of Two Auditors, who shall be elected at the Annual Meeting from the general body of the Members of the Society.

PREFACE.

Ardingly Eegisters commence with the year 1558, and, down to the year 1812, are contained in five thin volumes or parts. The first part, which is on parch- ment, comprises the years 1558 to 1651. The entries in this from 1558 to 1598 were copied, pursuant to the consti- tution of the Convocation of Canterbury made in 1597, and approved under the Great Seal, from the original paper Register, which still exists and has been compared with the copy, with the results shewn in this volume. The second part extends from 1649 to 1690, two years partially over- lapping, and is on parchment, as are the remaining parts, viz., 1690 to 1724, 1724 to 1806, and 1806 to 1812. They are all in a, very fair state of preservation, except that in the second part the page which contained the Marriages from 1681 to 1689 has been cut out. They are kept in an iron safe in the Vestry at the Church at Ardingly.

The Eev. J. H. Lee Booker, at one time Curate at Ardingly, made a transcript of the Eegisters up to 1724, and added a number of Ardingly Wills and other matter. This large folio volume is preserved with the Eegisters; it has greatly facilitated the compilation of the present volume, and remains as a treasured record of the untiring zeal which Mr. Booker devoted to the history of Ardingly.

Thanks are due to Miss Cooper for the care with which she has prepared the contents of this volume,, and for comparing the Registers, as to the earliest parchment, with the paper Register, and as to all of them with the Bishop's transcripts at Lewes, which begin in 1607,, and for obtaining from these various missing entries, and some other omitted details. She has also compiled the Index.

Mr. Renshaw, K.C., has kindly supplied a number of entries of Marriages in other Parishes relating to Ardingly, and has generously given much valuable assistance and advice throughout.

Acknowledgments and thanks are also due to Mr. W. W. Freeland and to Mr. Lintot for permitting the inspection of the Bishop's transcripts without fees,, and to the Rev. J. L. Brack, Rector of Ardingly, for allowing the fullest access to the Registers,, and in many ways facilitating the work.
